Leather is a material which has always been used for clothing and shoes. Today it is hard to imagine the fashion trade without leather. It occupies a prominent position in a wide variety of different collections and variations.
Leather is a natural product made from the skin of pigs, cattle, lambs, deer. It has the same properties as our skin and is thus breathable, supple and elastic – but at the same time strong and robust. Leather is therefore an extremely suitable material for all areas of equestrian sport. The leather saddle has to be comfortable for the horse as well as the rider, leather shoes for riders have to fit like a second skin and it is important that the bridle does not rub.
Most our riding equipment is made of leather and subjected to considerable strain. Thus it is all the more important – also in the safety interests of the horse as well as the rider – to keep the leather supple and tear-proof.
The special properties of leather require very specific care. The knowledge that rubbing grease into leather preserves it and keeps it supple has been passed down through many generations. The incorrect case of leather (e. g. cleaning with strong surfactants and too much water) can dry it out and make it brittle.
The Effax leather care series has the additional outstanding feature that even in the case of temperature fluctuations, the quality remains stable. For example Leather-Cream-Soap which has become frozen, can even be used again after it has thawed.
Leather-Care
A distinction is made between oil-based and grease-based leather care.
In the case of a thin leather structure it is recommended to use a grease or balm because oil penetrates deeper and more quickly into the leather on account of its consistency. Accordingly an oil-based product is more appropriate in the case of particularly hard and thick leather. The oil ensures that the leather becomes more supple.
